After a long dreary winter, spring has finally sprung. So I was thrilled to hear about The Spring Fling Kidlit Writing Contest, hosted by author Ciara O’Neal and agent Kaitlyn Sanchez which is open for entries April 1-3.The challenge: “Find a gif and write a spring-inspired story. Blossoming flowers? Sure! Easter eggs? You bet! Mothers day? Of course! Anything related to Spring is yours for the telling.” Sounds easy enough, right? The kicker is the story has to be 150 words or less, for kids under 12. See Ciara’s website for further details: https://ciaraoneal.weebly.com/spring-fling-kidlit-contest I would love you to read my 150-word microfiction, based on this GIF. If you love to write short stories for kids why not join in? If you do enter, please leave a link in the comments so I can check out yours. Good luck to everyone! |
A Magical Unicorn Ride by Ella English
Giggles, the gnome, had a unicorn duvet, and he papered his walls with unicorns.
While visiting the playground, he spotted one!
“I’ve always wanted to ride a unicorn!” he squealed. “May I?”
“Not now. It’s my job to bring in spring, and my feet are tired,” the unicorn said.
When the unicorn touched her horn to the earth, tiny shoots sprouted.
“How about I give you a foot massage?” Giggles said, as plants burst into flower all around him.
“There’s no time.”
“Wait!” Giggles said, pulling a sack of rainbow carrots from his knapsack and forming a picture of the unicorn on the ground.
“Not too shabby,” the unicorn muttered while chomping on the carrots, her eyes glinting. “Climb onboard!”
In a flash, the unicorn soared over swings. Too fast, she slid down the slide.
CRASH!
Giggles flew into the air, landing bumpily.
“I’m the happiest gnome alive,” he cried.

What a fun pairing! Love the idea of a gnome-riding unicorn.

Love it! It’s fantastic how the unicorn ride is far from perfect, but the gnome remains delighted. 🙂

What a cute story, between the unicorn and gnome. Such a fun tale; I truly enjoyed this piece.
What an imagination! You are talented. Will look forward to more such mini stories. Keep it up.
My little one would love this! Well done.
This was absolutely delightful to read. I was captured by the charming character of Giggles the gnome and his dream of riding a unicorn, and the story’s ending left me with a warm feeling inside.
The GIF you chose is absolutely charming–the perfect inspiration for a story! The idea of a unicorn-obsessed gnome is so kid-friendly & appealing that I think this could be the basis for an actual picture book. Good luck in the contest!
