Wolf and demon born…

…under storm the land is torn.

Tendrils of darkness reach from the depths of her mind and shadows flicker
around every corner. Still reeling from Raven’s horrific display of
power, Kari suffers in silence.

When Guine finally returns with stories of a mirror that could help him
with his problems, Kari finds herself hoping that maybe, just maybe, it
could help with hers as well.

With the promise of a relatively straightforward outing, Kari, Ari, and
Guine set forth to find the mirror.

But what they find beyond the looking-glass threatens not only Kari and her
sanity, but also the world she loves.

“Not Guine,” she rasped.

Raven laughed again, a low, almost sadly amused chuckle. “You’ve changed, Kari. Do you see that in yourself? When we met, you would have struck my face for such an offer.”

What good would it do now? She found herself wondering. Feeling the great shadow named Alistair at her back, and its countless other brothers, she knew she could not fight Raven. Not by myself.

Let me, purred the Catalyst. I will kill her. Her blood will be everywhere.

She clenched her fists. But what about everyone else?!

The Catalyst answered with a giggle that burned her chest.

Raven smirked and held out a hand. Shadows pooled thicker between them.

“Once we’re gone, he will be left alone and unharmed.” Raven’s smile stretched, splitting her face. “I may even have further incentive for you.”

The shadows around her feet shimmered, reflecting an image in their otherwise obsidian surface. There was a field of flowers; lilies, all draped in gray. And a girl. A lone girl with a head of blonde hair.

“Kiki!”

“I am not heartless, hm?” Raven tapped her lip. “You can see her before we begin.”

Kari knew she should have felt rage at this reminder of what Raven had done to her first friend, yet there was only quiet desperation.

I can see Kiki. Maybe…maybe I can free her at last. Kari slid one foot forward. Guine would be safer. Kiki would be freed. That is worth it.
