schiele orange: Egon Schiele, Self-portrait in orange jacket, 1913, Albertina Museum, Vienna, Austria. Detail.

This is a no brainer. For me, it’s Egon Schiele. This guy wasn’t just a painter; he was a raw, unfiltered window into the human soul.

Picture Vienna at the turn of the 20th century: a young artist with wild hair and even wilder ideas, creating art that would make your grandmother blush and your art professor lose their mind. That was Schiele. His paintings aren’t pretty – they’re REAL. Twisted bodies, angular limbs, faces that look like they’re screaming or about to cry.

Growing up half-British and half-Austrian (is “Austrish” a thing? I’m making it a thing), I’ve always felt this weird connection to Schiele. His art is like looking into a psychological mirror – uncomfortable, raw, but impossible to look away from. His life was as dramatic as his art. Kicked out of art school, arrested for “pornographic” drawings, living on the edge in Vienna. Then, just as he was hitting his stride, he and his pregnant wife died in the 1918 flu pandemic. Talk about a tragic artistic legend. My top Schiele paintings that’ll blow your mind:

An intense self-portrait where he looks like he’s about to jump out of his own skin

Four Trees with a dramatic sky – how does he get so much emotion into just trees?

Schiele wasn’t just painting bodies. He was dissecting human emotion, stripping away social masks, showing us exactly what it means to be vulnerable, messy, and alive. If you want art that punches you in the gut and makes you feel something REAL, Schiele is your guy. Trust me – once you see his work, you can’t unsee it. And why would you want to?

I’m a huge nerd. I know it’s not fine art, but I really love everything Frank Frazetta has ever done. He did a lot of fantasy art, and he was an amazing talent.

  2. P.J. MacLayne

Thanks for joining the hop again, Ella. As far as the artist goes – wow. You can feel the pain pouring out from the canvas. (or whatever he used)

  3. OnlyPrints

It’s always fun to think about which artist inspires us most. The way art connects us to emotions is so powerful.

  4. Richard Dee

I haven’t seen this artist’s work before, I love the trees.

  5. Lisa at Following the Rivera

I can see why you like his style, it’s so unique and very procovative. I like Van Gogh, he is classic and timeless.

    1. Ella English

I find looking at him makes you uncomfortable, usually not pleasant to look at, but nevertheless thrilling.

  6. Stevie Turner

I like the four trees painting most – not keen on the others.

  7. Jupiter Hadley

This is such an interesting art style! Thank you for sharing this artist with us.

  8. Victoria Prasad

Wow! His work is indeed raw and intense! It’s a good day when I learn something new….I hadn’t heard of Egon Schiele before or seen any of his work. It’s so sad that he passed away as he was hitting his stride.

  9. Karen

I love love love Egon Schiele, I have a few books about it. He definitely is one of my favorite artists.

  10. Lynndee

I like the last one. I always enjoy looking at scenery or landscapes when it comes to painting and that one is beautiful.

  11. Lavanda

As for my favorite artist, I’m drawn to surrealism, especially Dali’s work. There’s something about the dreamlike quality that pulls me in every time!

    1. Ella English

Yes Dali is really something else! Such a strange imagination.

  12. Marysa

It’s hard to say who my favorite artist is. I wasn’t familiar much with Schiele. I enjoyed the pieces that you posted here, they are so interesting.

  13. Nick

I believe Egon Schiele’s work definitely isn’t for the faint of heart, but that’s what makes it so powerful. His raw, unfiltered style captures human emotion in a way that sticks with you.

  14. Laura

Definitely has a distinctive style, but difficult to overlook the fact he served jail time for immorality with minors. Though not featured here, depictions of underage prostitutes are a common theme in his work. Child exploitation can not be glossed over, even for the sake of art.

  15. Melanie E

I must admit to knowing very little about art. Egon sounds like an interesting individual who didn’t get to live to his full potential from the sound of it. His art, although on the dark side, draws in the onlooker.

  16. Melissa Cushing

I really have never had a favorite but I will say I am intrigued by the photos of art above. I will have to learn more about Egon as I am appreciating his work. It is raw but beautiful.

  17. AJ

I am not sure I have ever had a favorite, but its definitely something to think about. I’ve never heard of this artist either, but I do love the trees!!

  18. Yeah Lifestyle

Such interesting artwork as not seen Egon Schiele’s work before. It is very unique indeed. I personally don’t have a favourite at the moment and still enjoy traditional artists
